Ask Your Customers about Why they Buy

“I’ve learned that you’ll never be disappointed if you always keep an eye on uncharted territory, where you’ll be challenged and growing and having fun.”

As a home-based business owner you can learn so much by going back and talking with your current customers and people who haven’t bought from you yet.  The information you gather from these people can be hugely helpful to you when you develop new marketing appeals.  Here are a several thoughts to guide you:

  • Have you surveyed your current and previous customers to find out who they are and how to reach more of them?
  • Have you asked your current and past customers why they bought from you – from their point of view? You can use those buying reasons in future marketing efforts.
  • Have you asked the people who didn’t buy from you to learn who they are? What they have in common? And, why they didn’t buy?  Some simply may not be ideal customers – but with others you can eliminate those reasons in future marketing efforts.
  • Feel a little bit queasy about asking someone why they didn’t buy?  Don’t be.  In 99.4 percent of cases it’s not personal.  It’s usually because they didn’t understand something (which often can give you a chance to sell again) or because there’s something about what you offered which didn’t quite fit what they need.
  • Simply say, “I just want to ask you a couple questions because I’m learning and I sincerely want to do better.”  I’ve never had anyone say no when I’ve said it in a real spirit of wanting to improve myself and my business.

Dealing with Change for 40+ Women

By Denise Michaels, Author, “Testosterone-free Marketing”

If you’re old enough to remember rocking out to the Beatles when they were live and not a video on YouTube, chances are the pace at which change is occurring is disconcerting.   It’s all about rolling with it – especially in your business.

Maybe you can’t embrace techno-pop or rap, but it’s still smart to stay in the game and stay relevant. Success is about more than just marketing and selling.  It helps to know what’s going on in the world around you.  Instead of thinking you’ve got it right and Gen X or Gen Y is full of beans – pay attention. The assumed power of the Baby Boomers moving through the demographic pipeline is a thing of the past.  The younger generations of adults now have larger numbers and more influence in our changing society.

So, what does it mean to stay relevant?

It’s not about trying to act like a teenager but keeping up with technology (somewhat anyway), keeping your appearance in the current decade rather than in a time warp and stop thinking, “When I was in my first management job we did it the right way – not THAT way.”

I don’t like feeling like a dinosaur either, but our notion of “the right way” means nothing to these young adults.

Remember, perception is reality.  If you come across as superior and as if you know more than “those kids” they’ll turn away and won’t listen.  Remember when you were in your early 20s and you thought you knew everything and had the world by the tail?  It’s no different today.

Most young adults in the 18-30 year old category have had a computer in their home since they were a toddler.  They probably don’t know what a cassette tape is.   Since they could vote or drink a beer we’ve been at war with Afghanistan and Iraq.  And, since they’ve been a tween, Casual Friday has morphed into Casual Everything.

I was talking with a marketing mentoring client yesterday.  I don’t want to say her age, but let’s just say she’s had her AARP card a few years now.  She exclaimed to me, “Oh, those kids don’t know anything!”

Unfortunately that attitude will keep you on the sidelines when it comes to selling to 20 and 30-somethings.  Those younger folks have money to spend and they’ll buy if you don’t come across as superior or hopelessly old-fashioned.

On the flip side, I have another marketing mentoring client who’s 29.   She’s sees me as having wisdom and acumen based on decades of experience she hasn’t even lived.  I don’t preach or tell her how the world used to be.  I’m not judgmental about her lifestyle choices.  I had to be careful not to wince when she got her tongue pierced.

The world has changed and you know what?  Some of those young folks that look easy to diss in their skinny jeans and platform heels are smart, hard-working, confident and have a lot on the ball.  That client of mine with the pierced tongue is becoming very successful since she launched her business last spring.

What are you doing on Labor Day?

By Denise Michaels, Author, “Testosterone-Free Marketing”

It’s 12:30 pm on Labor Day and I’m thinking about what to have for lunch.  Haven’t decided yet.  I’ve already bought groceries, spent some time Facebooking, gone for a walk and I have two client meetings a little later this afternoon.

Most of us know Labor Day as one of the last blasts of summer.  The last day to celebrate with baseball games, beaches and burgers on the grill.  The kids are back in school and according to the Staples ads it’s, “The Most Wonderful Day of the Year!!!!”

Before you know it Halloween will be here.  Then it’s a hop, skip and a jump until Thanksgiving.  Smell the turkey and spices wafting from the oven.  Then, all the holidays of light happen depending on which spiritual path you follow:  Ramadan (Muslim), Divali (Hindu), Hanukah (Jewish), the Winter Solstice (Pagan) and Christmas (Christian).  What all these holidays have in common is that they celebrate light at the darkest time of year – when the days are at their shortest.  Then, the New Year - celebrated with lights and sparkles is right around the bend.  I can already feel your heart beating a little faster as you contemplate these obvious facts.

But right now you still have the better part of four months to make the rest of 2009 a great year with your business as you possibly can.  It’s easy to get distracted with all the things we’re supposed to do this time of year.  I say only do the ones you like.

Many women business owners just throw in the towel the closer they get to the holidays.  But it doesn’t have to be that way.  It’s Labor Day and the skies are still sunny.  You probably do a lot of labor already with your business and your family.  Vow this year to make the most of your business and go easy on the holiday magician stuff.

We sometimes forget how much is expected of us that wasn’t expected of our moms:

  • We don’t just work hard - we own businesses.
  • We’re expected to stay looking “hot” or be considered invisible until we keel over.
  • Our homes are supposed to be not just clean – they’re supposed to be disinfected like a hospital room.
  • We don’t just put up a Christmas tree.  We’re supposed to re-decorate the entire house.
  • Our children can’t walk to school by themselves or play outdoors – too dangerous.
  • We need to watch out for trans-fats, sodium and other bad stuff in our food
  • And we’re supposed to be plugged in and online 24/7.

I don’t know about you – but that’s a lot of labor.   Give yourself permission not to be perfect.  You don’t have to do it the way your mom or grandma did it.  In fact if you had her life chances are you’d actually have it a little easier.  Enjoy your Labor Day and then decide to put that extra energy into your business.

Does “Balance” Work for Women?

By Denise Michaels, Author, “Testosterone-Free Marketing”

I was on Facebook this morning and came across a group discussion where women were saying, “The answer to being successful is all about having balance.”  As if to imply that if we embrace balance – every other problem in life will simply fall away.

I feel “balance” is a lofty ideal but in practise its baloney.  It leads women to believe they can do everything. Then we feel stress and inadequate when we can’t. It adds stress to our lives because as long as we say – the word “balance” we’re supposed to be able to cram it all in. Yes, I know it’s politically incorrect to cast aspersions on the idea of balance because it hints at the notion maybe we can’t have it all.

We can have it all – but not necessarily all at the same time. You can’t help your child with homework and be at your Pilates class at the same time. You can’t have dinner together as a family every night and be at a business meeting at the same time. It’s not just about balance – its about making compromises and improving your skills in the areas where you’re struggling now.

I was chatting last week with a woman who had five businesses. Oh, three kids and a husband, too. When I asked her which business is her focus she trilled merrily about how she loves them all and is focused on all of them.  My experience (I’ve mentored over 1,500 business owners) is when a home-based business owner who doesn’t have help to delegate to has more than one business – they aren’t making money (a full-time income) at any of those businesses. By the way, I see this much more frequently with women than with men.

Here’s an interesting statistic:

If your focus is on one primary goal and you keep working on it and doing what’s necessary to succeed, you have a 91% chance of turning it into a reality. If you split your focus on two primary goals your chance of success goes down to 63%. And if you’re trying to work on three primary goals at the same time your chance of success plummets to 27%.

Many women start a new business when they haven’t given the first one an honest shot and figured out how to market and sell in that business.  Instead, they add another business.  They don’t improve their cash flow but they get the admiration of all who say, “Look how busy she is!”

Let’s be honest. The initial “original creation” phase is fun.  It’s creative.

Its not as much fun when the rubber meets the road and suddenly you’re hearing “no” when you were hoping you’d hear a lot more “yeses.” It feels like rejection. But the solution isn’t to “balance better” and start another business.  The solution is to let go of the excuses of why your business isn’t creating the cash flow you imagined and figure out how to turn it around.

Get beyond your hesitation and learn how to market and sell successfully – in a way that works with your style as a woman. (That’s what I help women do, by the way.)

If you’re floundering, trying to figure out how to make a full time income with your business - it may be time to make a few positive changes and stop feeling like you have to squeeze in even more.  The only way to end the challenge of too many people saying “no” and not enough people saying “yes” is to buckle down and learn what you don’t know – how to market and sell.

Health, Happiness and Abundance

“Health is the greatest gift, contentment the greatest wealth, faithfulness the best relationship.”

- Buddha

Denise Michaels, Author, ‘Testosterone-Free Marketing”

Health, wealth and happiness.  That’s what living a successful life is all about.

The quote by Buddha is about that elusive word: “balance.”  I believe we can have it all but not necessarily all at the same time.  If you’re busy being a great parent you probably don’t have the time to start a Fortune 500 company – but it doesn’t mean you can’t have a successful, home-based enterprise.

Notice the first word in this quote is “health.”  As a woman, it’s easy to get so busy with your life and your business that taking care of your health goes to the bottom of the list.  When I take an hour a day to exercise I actually accomplish more all day long.  So, exercise isn’t just a way of taking care of my body.  It also seems to help me take care of my mind.

Know Your Market and Sell More

“Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant.”

                                                                                                     ~ Robert Louis Stevenson

By Denise Michaels, Author, “Testosterone-Free Marketing”

Many women in business, surprisingly, haven’t a clue who their customers are and why they buy their product.  If you say, “Everyone is my market,” that means no one is your market or you simply don’t know.  The more specific you can get about the kind of person who buys your products or services – the more you can zero in on the perfect message and venue for that message that will make those people take notice.  Figure out the characteristics, qualities and attributes of your ideal customers.  Then, market to them and only them.

Monster US Jobs Index Soars in August

NEW YORK (Reuters) – A monthly gauge of U.S. online labor demand soared in August at its fastest pace in four years, indicating steadier footing for nationwide labor demand, a private research group said on Thursday, September 3rd.

Monster Worldwide Inc, an online careers and recruiting firm, said its employment index surged to 121 in August, up 6 percent from 114 in July.

It was the biggest monthly increase the index has seen since August 2005.

The index was down 24 percent from a reading of 159 a year ago, marking the most moderate year-over-year decline in 2009.

Though job openings posted online are at their lowest in almost two and a half years, there are signs employment may turn around in the near term.

“The significant jump in the Monster Employment Index in August offers encouraging signs of improvement in the U.S. economy with the demand for managers and professionals as well as sales and office workers picking up in time for the fall hiring season,” said Jesse Harriott, senior vice president at Monster.

The index rose to its highest since February, and contracted on a yearly basis at the slowest rate since December 2008, Harriott added.

Labor demand in the retail, administrative and financial industries showed the strongest growth, and a recent rise in investor confidence sparked increased opportunities in company management.

By occupation, employment in the arts design, entertainment, sports and media sectors picked up in August after hitting historic lows, while demand for healthcare, community and personal care services jobs suffered for the second straight month.

The Monster Employment index is a monthly analysis based on a selection of corporate career sites and job boards. The margin of error is approximately plus or minus 1 percent.
