Upbeat Business and Economic News

Think the economic picture out there is grim? If you’re looking for a job you may have a rough road to hoe for the next few months – but I’ve talked with a number of women home-based business owners who’ve whispered to me, “Denise, I can’t believe how terrific my sales have been. It’s like I’ve got new customers coming out of the woodwork.”

Consumers have held back for well over a year. There is serious pent-up demand for all kinds of products and services and if you can get beyond your prospective customer’s initial hesitation and show ‘em why what you offer is a great value – there are a lot of people ready to get on with life, proclaim this recession personally over – and buy from you.

Just check out these article leads I discovered in a quick online search of economic news:

DETROIT (Reuters) – Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche said on Monday that he is cautiously optimistic about the world automotive market and saw a 3-4 percent increase in unit sales this year. Zetsche told journalists at the Detroit Auto Show that he saw the Chinese market posting single-digit growth in 2010, while Daimler’s own sales in that market would grow faster, he said.

HERKIMER, N.Y. – As a new year dawns, Herkimer County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director John Scarano said he is optimistic about the future of local businesses. “We’ve had a few rough years,” said Scarano. “Our businesses — especially small businesses — have reacted better than other businesses in the country. We know how to adapt and survive. They’ve been around for quite a while.” According to the state Department of Labor Web site, the unemployment rate declined to 8.6 percent in November — below the national number of 10 percent.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – The next 12 months hold much opportunity for investors in the U.S. chemical industry as its members hope to ride a wave of cautious economic optimism and capitalize on growing consumer confidence. After two years of frenzied stock swings, debt downgrades, and slumping revenue and profit, some of the industry’s biggest players are charily confident that a long-awaited economic uptick is coming this year.

SAN JOSE, CA – Small-business owners throughout Silicon Valley express a reserved, low-key sense of confidence as they enter 2010. That’s a dramatic contrast to how they felt a year ago. “I’m cautiously optimistic,” said Andy Meade, president of Meade Construction Group Inc., a San Jose-based general contracting firm specializing in high-tech and health care projects. “When we entered 2009, I’d say the general feeling was fear and pessimism.”

CHICAGO BUSINESS — Is business looking up? Are execs feeling optimistic? OfficeMax is banking that the answer to both questions is yes, and its enlisted Fast Company and BusinessWeek on its optimism crusade. The office supplies retailer is launching a new brand campaign, its first since 2004, under the banner “Good News for Business.” The comprehensive effort represents Office Max’s biggest marketing investment in four years, said Bob Thacker, senior VP-marketing and advertising. “It’s substantial,” said Mr. Thacker. “We feel it’s time to start focusing on the 90% of the population that is working. That’s not to minimize the 10% that aren’t. But for business to thrive, we have to get beyond fear and focus on hope.”

LOUISVILLE, KY – Owners of small and medium-sized businesses are increasingly optimistic about future business prospects for 2010, according to a survey conducted by City Business Journals Network. The network is owned by Charlotte, N.C.-based American City Business Journals Inc., owner of Business First of Louisville.

The “Balloon Boy” Hoax and 15-min. of Fame

You had to be living under a rock if you didn’t hear the story out of Fort Collins Colorado last week regarding the six year old boy who parents said they were afraid had blown away in a homemade weather balloon on Thursday. The nation sat gripped with awe as we watched images of this aluminum foil looking balloon buffeted along over empty fields and up to heights of over 15,000 feet. Finally it was discovered the boy was hiding in a box in the attic of the family’s home the whole time. Happy ending?

Police discovered the event was a hoax. The father is a publicity hound whose been on a couple episodes of reality TV. He did it to improve his chances of getting on another reality TV show.

If only the six year old boy hadn’t ratted him out and thrown up on national television – his scheme probably would’ve worked.

On September 9th a Congressman from South Carolina shouted, “You lie!” during an important speech by the President. He apologized to the President, but within a week he raised over a million dollars in campaign contributions which will probably ensure his re-election in 2010.

Back in the 1960s, artist Andy Warhol said, “Everyone will have 15 minutes of fame.”

In both cases I don’t agree with what these people did. What blows me away is their results.

Here’s what I see: unless someone is brought up on charges for breaking the law, in 2009 people are often rewarded for “bad behavior.” It makes headlines and if you leverage it the right way, it’ll keep you in the headlines. It used to take extraordinary talent to become a celebrity – now it takes something like a sex tape leaked on the internet and crazy behavior aka Kim Kardashian. Bingo! Instant fame and reality star of a show now in its sixth season.

What does this mean for you and your business?

You can be a nice girl and say, “I’d never do anything like that!” Or, it may be time to suck up your confidence and make some noise about your home-based business and stop waiting for people to discover you. After all, publicity can be an incredibly valuable form of marketing.

Tell the world. Say something controversial. Plan a publicity stunt. Get your phone ringing off the hook.

According to Wikipedia: “A publicity stunt is a planned event designed to attract the public’s attention to the event’s organizers or their cause. Publicity stunts can be professionally organized or set up by amateurs. Such events are frequently utilized by advertisers, celebrities, athletes, and politicians.”

Can you use a publicity stunt in some way?

Don’t automatically say, “No, I could never pull off a stunt.” Consider the possibilities.

Obama Surprise Winner for Nobel Peace Prize

This morning President Barack Obama was named winner of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. Tongues wagged.

Many felt the choice was an exciting one. Reflecting an acknowledgment of the international effect Obama has had. And, how people in many countries are more hopeful about America’s leadership, but also excited about their own prospects for peace and prosperity.

Some asked, “What has Obama really DONE?” They must’ve given the award on their expectations for what he’ll do in the future and not based on what the 44th President has accomplished.

Then – leave it to the whack job right wingers. Rush Limbaugh, with 20 million listeners daily, said he was in agreement with the Taliban – Obama shouldn’t get the award. For good measure Limbaugh said the world sees our President as a joke.

The Nobel Peace Prize is one of the greatest honors in the world. It establishes respect for a person’s work towards peace worldwide. Naturally, Limbaugh finds a way to flip it 180 degrees to appeal to his hate-besotted listeners.

Former President Bush spent eight years holding back progress – in science, medicine, culture and other facets of life. Like standing in the middle of the Mississippi River trying to hold the water back. No one could predict the rush of changes that bust loose January 20th on Inauguration Day. There was no stuffing the toothpaste back in the tube again.

The America I grew up in was largely a white, Christian country. There were minorities of every color and creed. But the majority was so firmly in control and dominant, people who didn’t fit the mold went with the program. It was the American way and no one ever thought it would change.

The last 25 years the American landscape has shifted dramatically. African Americans are about the same percentage of the population – but they’ve increased significantly in economic clout and influence in all sectors of American life. The numbers of Asians and Middle Eastern people, while still small, are evident in greater numbers. The biggest population shift is the millions of Hispanics, now proud Americans. Another sea change: the fastest growing religion in America today is Buddhism often embraced by former Protestants, Catholics, Baptists and others. Instead of teaching their children the words to “Onward Christian Soldier” they’re teaching them how to meditate.

White, right-wing Americans with their continued sense of entitlement are no longer the dominant demographic force. And they’re mad as hell. Seems like they’re afraid the rug’s been pulled out from beneath them. Not by Obama, but by the flood of population changes resulting in different priorities and different values. The USA isn’t all about them any more. Many are struggling to maintain a grip on the America that always felt so safe as it slips away. They still see themselves as the “real Americans” and everyone else is an also-ran Nobody’s trying to get into their exclusive “club” anymore.

The world views Afghanistan and the Taliban as stuck in the bad, old days of the Middle Ages. Limbaugh and his followers are right there along with ‘em. Trying desperately to hold back inevitable change. Shouldn’t that tell you something about the sheer power of this wave? (I’m hoping in a few years there won’t be sufficient numbers of ‘em to support ratings – and ad revenues – for national shows like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck.)

One obvious example of this came during the summer of our discontent as right wingers swooped down on Town Hall meetings to scream at politicians. One blonde woman in an Arkansas Town Hall meeting plaintively cried, “I’m scared! I want MY America back!!”

But you can’t stuff the toothpaste back in the tube again.

Personally, I wouldn’t want to. I live in a neighborhood that’s like a little United Nations. It’s a mix of White, Black, Hispanic and Middle Eastern folks. My husband’s originally from India so he adds a little Asian. Wide-sweeping changes are coming in science, health care, the environment, the economy and more. Right wingers still dumb-founded by Obama’s election – find it hard to fathom they’re not as “in control” as they always were. The safe mantle of entitlement they always assumed would be theirs is gradually being peeled away. As a result, screaming mean-spirited, racist people are rearing their ugly heads.

The times are exciting and honestly – I don’t love all the changes. I don’t love:
• How I feel I have to be plugged in and “on” all the time.
• The rudeness and animosity permeating both left and right.
• That objectivity has gone the way of the dodo bird in journalism
• If we don’t keep up with technology, well fuggedaboudit.
• It looks like we’re getting more deeply entrenched in Afghanistan

I do like that:
• We’re closer to real health care reform than ever before.
• Players on the world stage are looking to America to lead again
• Millions of African Americans now proudly wave American flags
• Millions of children who never felt they had a chance now have hope
• There’s a push toward a “green” economy and sustainable energy

I don’t know where all the change is going. My crystal ball’s a little smudged. I’m open to an America that works for everyone – not just a few. A country respected on an international stage. And whether President Obama got the Nobel Peace Prize as a result of his accomplishments or expectations for what he might do – I wish him well and proudly salute this honor. It also says those of us who voted for Obama because we were confident his approach would be met with approval on the world stage were right – and that feels great.

As for Limbaugh and his knuckle-dragging followers who cling desperately to the past like the Taliban and their right-wing sense of entitlement: you can’t stuff the toothpaste back into the tube.

Three Positive Economic News Headlines

All three of the headlines below were released Thursday October 8th, 2009. This is good news for women business owners who focus on success as we go into the final stretch of 2009 and look to next year.

1) NEW YORK — The stock market resumed its rally after getting encouraging readings on two of the best gauges of the economy’s health: consumer spending and corporate profits.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 61 points Thursday after falling modestly the day before. The gains added to the market’s already steep climb for the week. Improving signals about the economy pushed the Dow up 244 points Monday and Tuesday, its best back-to-back advance since July.

Traders pounced on news that retailers last month had their first sales gains in more than a year. A closely watched gauge of sales at major retailers rose 0.1 percent for September. While still tepid, it was the first monthly rise in the International Council of Shopping Centers-Goldman Sachs tally since July 2008.

2) WASHINGTON (AP) – The number of newly laid-off Americans filing first-time claims for jobless benefits fell to the lowest level since early January, as layoffs eased a bit amid a fledgling economic recovery.

The fourth drop in new claims in five weeks is a sign the labor market is slowly healing. But employers are reluctant to hire new workers and the unemployment rate is expected to keep climbing well into next year.

The Labor Department said Thursday that new claims for unemployment insurance dropped last week to a seasonally adjusted 521,000, better than analysts expected and down from 554,000 the previous week.

3) NEW YORK (AP) – The nation’s stores saw their first sales gain in 14 months in September, a sign of life from shoppers that fuels some hope for the holiday shopping season.

A late Labor Day and delayed school openings helped boost back-to-school sales in September. And stores’ figures are looking better as they are compared last September when spending plummeted amid the ballooning financial meltdown.

But analysts dissecting the figures say they feel encouraged by Thursday’s reports even as they acknowledge that business still remains weak and consumers tight-fisted.

How to Make News Work for Your Business (Part 2)

Ever wondered how small business owners seem to get headlines in the media while you’ve sent in media releases in the past – but nothing’s ever happened? Today’s post is about how to use the news in a positive way to promote and market your business more successfully. This strategy is testosterone-free, can be done on a shoestring budget and will help women discover one of the secrets to media coverage that works.

Yesterday my post was about how to get a more balanced view of the news. How to see it in a more clear way, stay on top of things and spend less time doing it. Today is about promoting your business – plain and simple. Marketing you – the woman who owns a business. And, understanding news really CAN make a positive difference for a change.

This strategy is known as the “hook” or the “angle.”

If you recall in yesterday’s post one of the ways the media uses to fill up their hours and hours of endless news coverage time is to spin off new “angles” or “tangents” on the same story. Guess what? You may be able to help them to do just that. *wink*

When a story is really big and there is a tremendous amount of interest in it – reporters, editors and producers are desperately looking for new “angles” or “hooks” to keep up the already heightened interest. When they say a story has “legs” it means there are a lot of ways that story can keep going and going.

The biggest news story of the decade was the event that took place September 11, 2001. Look at all the groups impacted:

• People in New York
• People who got out of the World Trade Center buildings
• Families of the people who didn’t get out
• The fire department that helped and lost 300+ firefighters
• Employees and families of Canton Fitzgerald on the 96th floor most of whom perished
• The travel industry New York
• The airline industry nationwide
• Hawaiin tourism – their primary industry – took a huge hit
• Rudy Giuliani (the mayor of NYC at the time) surged in popularity
• The insurance company in Switzerland who insured the buildings that fell
• A manufacturer of American flags in New Jersey had skyrocketing sales
• A suburb in New Jersey lost 50+ residents
• The funeral industry was impacted and there was a shortage of caskets
• Broadway and the theatres on the Great White Way
• 143 people who perished were from Great Britain
• People around the US who had relatives in 9/11
• Our US military
• … and many, many more

Every one of the bullets above created stories in newspapers, on TV, radio and online – sometimes numerous stories. I could go on writing bullets like what you see above for another hour – but hopefully you get the idea how two planes flying into the World Trade Center impacted not just those buildings and the people in them but much, much more.

Your mission – should you choose to accept it – is to watch for big news stories and create an angle or a hook where you can respond as an expert or authority within your business. It doesn’t have to be nearly as big a story as 9/11 was. But it must be big enough to have legs. And when it happens you need to respond quickly.

Let me give you three examples:

Several years ago there was a guy in Atlanta who was in the courtroom being sentenced – I think it was for attempted rape. Somehow he managed to steal the gun from the bailiff. Then, he shot and killed the judge and bailiff. Next he got out of the courthouse and stole a car. He killed two more people on his spree and ended up at the apartment of Ashley Smith at 2:00 am. She’d just arrived home from buying cigarettes at the drug store across the street. In an ordeal that lasted all night she successfully talked this killing machine into taking her out of bondage and turning himself into police. Media called her a hero.

I wrote a media release and sent it out nationally saying she used “testosterone-free” marketing skills without even knowing it to bring the guy to justice. That release got me a 20 minute spot on a local TV interview show AND an article in a national business publication.

Here’s a second example:

Last July, the President was in a tele-town hall sponsored by AARP. He was asked about his health care plans. Particularly about one teensy part that allows doctors to get paid to talk with patients about their choices regarding end-of-life care. Obama replied he thought this was good because it encourages people to have a living will and we all should have a living will. And he said he and the First Lady both have a living will.

Well, I have a client who is an Elder Law attorney. I called her about this and suggested she check it out on CNN.com. Then I told her to write a media release positioning her as an authority in this regard. She did and got news coverage in her city – she still has a waiting list of clients who want her to draw up their living wills.

One last example:

I saw a story on CNN that said in a recent study it’s been determined that tanning beds are horribly carcinogenic and are a sure way to get skin cancer if you keep tanning that way on a regular basis. This story came out the beginning of August and Ernie and I had just returned from a glamorous one week cruise down to the Mexican Riviera. The day before we left I went to a woman who owns a business doing spray tans.

When I heard the story I called her on the phone and told her. I said she should write a media release reinforcing that spray tans are a safer way to go. She didn’t write the release but she put a box on her website with the story’s headline and a link to the video on CNN.com. Also, whenever she went to networking events she included that headline in her “elevator speech.” She told me just being aware of that news story helped her business tremendously the last couple months.

The moral is – don’t be afraid of the news or the media. Look at it not as a regular Joe or Joanne six-pack news consumer. Instead look for opportunities and ways that it can help your own business to grow and succeed.

How to Make News Work for Your Business (Part 1)

You’re busy. You don’t have a lot of time for news. However, as a woman, home-based business owner out in the world, it’s probably a good strategy to keep up with what’s happening. Then there’s all that negativity in the news. Who needs all the dire predictions of increased terror alerts and another murder weighing you down?

This two part article provides a few smart guidelines for slightly overwhelmed women business owners to keep up with news without getting caught up in it. Maybe you can even benefit from it. Hopefully, I have some useful knowledge for the task. Journalism was one of my majors in college (Marketing was the other).

If you’re over 40 it may be hard to remember a day when we didn’t have so much TV news. There was a half hour in the morning. A half hour at noon. A half hour at dinner time. And a half hour at 11:00 pm. That’s it. I remember when NBC’s The Today Show was one hour – now it’s four hours. It’s crazy.

Traditional news as an industry is going through massive change. It’s not just in the last year with the economic tailspin we’ve experienced. In the last two decades with the onset of the internet, newpapers and two a lesser degree are barely hanging on with their fingernails for survival.

“So what? Why should I care?” you say. Consider this: the vast majority of investigative journalism that uncovers the big stories is provided by and paid for by traditional news sources. Newspapers and TV are online – but most haven’t yet figured out how to turn online news into a profitable business model that supports all their costs.

There are three cable news networks that report all news all the time: FOX, CNN and MSNBC. Then there’s ever-increasing news programming on network television. Then there’s what I call “niche news” like CSpan, providing gavel to gavel coverage of Congress. “E” is about entertainment news – basically celebrity fluff.

Since there’s not much more happening, but 24 hours of time to fill and tougher competition for ratings (which is translated to advertising revenues and survival) what’s a network exec to do?

There’s plenty of news out there – but by and large Americans aren’t overly concerned with international headlines. Also, we seem to only be able to handle a few snippets of good news – what gets eyeballs glued to the the tube are the three Cs: conflict, controversy and confrontation If happy, positive news of what’s right in the world got the same kind of ratings – believe me – that’s what would be aired.

Three things:
• Repeat the same story over and over again. Ever notice how the same video image is looped over and over again?
• Spin off new “angles” or “tangents” on the same story – this tactic can be an opportunity for your business I’ll discuss in a future post.*
• Sensationalize and whip up stories that are much ado about nothing into a frenzy.

One truism for news: “When dog bites man – that’s not news. Ahhhh, but when man bites dog? THAT’S news!

TV news is the most sensational. Why? It’s all about entertainment value – it’s a show. Written words seem less crazy-making than visual images and out-of-breath news anchors. What to do? Get your news online in written form or from a newspaper. If you feel you must watch – watch short videos online. Most of the commercials are removed – so you save time. And, you don’t have to watch stories you’re not interested in.

No matter where you get news – mix it up. Don’t get it from just one source if you want a balanced point of view. Sure, it’s pleasant to read or watch news that always agrees with your point of view. But it’s smart to understand the other side.

Also, avail yourself of news sources from other countries. BBC for example. Since my husband is originally from India, I get a kick out of Times of India. Just click on “World” and you’ll get a whole new perspective about how that part of the world sees us. Other online newspapers in English originate from different countries, too.

Let me give you an example:

FOX News clearly leans to the conservative right, politically. The network has spearheaded and given the most airtime to the “tea party” demonstrations and other right wing interests. FOX is most likely to oppose the current administration in the White House. Sean Hannity is especially virulent in his disdain of our current President. Many of his “news stories” fall into the category of much ado about nothing whipped into a frenzy.

Last week apparently a video surfaced on YouTube of school children singing songs praising President Obama. Hannity reported it as children being indoctrinated akin to something like “Hitler Youth.”

The next morning I saw the same “story” reported on CNN. The school principal was interviewed. She shared a few details: it was a one time program during Black History Month. The school children sang songs about President Washington, President Lincoln and President Obama. You still might now agree – but it’s a very different story indeed. But you would never get that context if you only watched the Hannity version of the story.

So, when reading or watching news keep these guidelines in mind.
• Don’t get overwhelmed with it.
• Limit your time with it.
• Avoid over-exposure to TV news
• And not too much all from one source.
• It’s all about balance.

The American Dream: Does it Still Work?

My husband Ernie and I live in Las Vegas which is absolutely in the depths of the housing slump. Since we had the highest highs – we’ve also had the most precipitous drop. Real estate appears poised to go up now – but it’s been a pretty long, fast, slide downward the last couple years. There’s a local show on radio once a week on the state of the housing and real estate market.

Recently a guest on the show remarked perhaps the idea of owning a home with a 30-year mortgage as “the American Dream” doesn’t set well with our changing, shifting lifestyles and careers anymore. After all, that model came into vogue back in the days when many Americans worked 30-40 years for the same company.

Now, not only don’t many of us work for the same company throughout our career. More and more of us are entrepreneurial, home-based business owners and don’t work for any company – like myself. At times entrepreneurs have gaps in their income that don’t fit with a big mortgage every month. That’s become the new norm when it comes to work. And as we’re digging out of this recession I believe we’re going to have an unprecedented wave of entrepreneurism. But mortgages are still like an albatross around the neck whether a person’s income goes up or down. Doesn’t quite work.

My husband and I own our home. We’ve been here almost eight years. We bought when the market was down right after 9/11. We didn’t do anything fancy or clever – just a basic, 30 year fixed mortgage. We also chose to live in a home that was below our means. Not very sexy. Unlike many of our friends and family who bought as much home as they could possibly qualify for. It’s decorated elegantly – but in size it’s modest. Our mortgage payment is equivalent to what many pay to rent a basic two bedroom apartment.

We have friends who’ve lost their fancy homes the last two years for a myriad of reasons. One couple we know – they’re both entreprenuers. The kids are close to grown and almost launched. He still works his full-time job in addition to his business. They live in a gorgeous home in a very upscale area but the income from their respective home-based businesses doesn’t really cut the mustard when it comes to the cashflow needed to live in that house. They know and accept sagely it’ll be a couple years before it flips around. They moved in four years ago when the market was at the top of it’s lofty peak. She recently whispered to me they’re trying to short sell the house and move into something much smaller. I told her about our smaller by half home and she sighed, “I wish we’d done that.”

We also have family members who are positively cash strapped to a massive mortgage. They too bought at the top of the market. She wasn’t working because she’d just had a baby a few months before they bought the house. She’s back to work now, but because of the high mortgage payments when their adjustable mortgage went up – she doesn’t really have the choice to be home with her kids.

We chose to live carefully and set aside the difference and we’ve invested in ourselves and in our own businesses. As a result, we’ve created a different kind of wealth. Part of it is money – but even more important is the knowledge that our security is all about our ability to create more money as we travel through life.

I don’t believe in relying on a specific theory or idea about money or security. None of them seem to hold water the way they did 20 years ago. The tectonic plates are shifting and the world is changing too fast to stay “married” to one idea or notion anymore. We’re shifting right along with it – and enjoying the journey.

Home Prices on the Rise – Including Foreclosures

DMM: I got this information from a local real estate blog. I’ve included the URL at the bottom. It was dated September 3, 2009 so it’s fairly recent. Las Vegas, where Ernie and I live, has been at the epicenter of the real estate market meltdown. The reason, is because we’ve had amazing growth for about 20 years now and the highest incidence of predatory lending in the country. So the region fell the hardest from its too lofty perch of a few years ago.

We talked with a Realtor while at a party last weekend. She said the massive inventory of foreclosures is a thing of the past. Houses are still selling for much less than a couple years ago. But they’re inching up as demand is about to outstrip the available supply. If real estate is coming back here in Vegas where it sunk the lowest – can your part of the country be far behind?

Could this be true? You betcha!! Homes coming on the market are priced to sell and are all too often being bid up in price. Just today I submitted an offer for a home that is $37 a sq. ft. WOW!! I’ll bet a dollar there will be a bidding war on the property. Even if the home sells for $50 a sq. ft. that is less than what it cost to build the home.

Inventory is moving super fast! Our office listed a property and the seller was worried it would take more than 3 months to sell. Was he wrong, there was a bonafide offer on the table in less than 24 hours and in escrow in 2 days.If you are serious about buying in Las Vegas, now is the time!!

Economic Surge Good News for Women in Biz

DMM: Stocks, manufacturing and housing up! Business is on the rise. More people working means more out there to happily say yes to what you market and sell. Get out there with confidence, ladies. The economy is coming back! Whoooo-hoooo! But I digress. Read the article and smile.

The immortal words of Gomer Pyle rang out in business headline after headline this week, “Surprise, Surprise, Surprise!” Women business owners take note:

First the banking sector became awash in surprisingly good news. Four of the US top banks smashed all earnings estimates and posted collective net profits of $13.6B for the second quarter.

Bank of America (BAC) posted a profit of $3.2B
Citigroup(C): $4.3B
Goldman Sachs (GS): $3.4B
JP Morgan Chase (JPM): $2.7B

The technology sector followed with Intel’s (INTC) surprise. It posted its best quarter over quarter sales increase since 1988. Further, the chip leader formally asserted that this current quarter ending in September, will be significantly stronger than any analysts had even dreamed of. IBM (IBM) also added its vote of Q3 confidence later in the week.

And there was more surprisingly good news in the jobs data Thursday. The number of initial claims in the week ending July 11 fell 47,000 to 522,000 – the lowest level since early January. The data for continuing claims also fell by 642,000 — the largest drop on record! This huge downward surprise even pulled the four-week moving average of these continuing unemployment claims down by 110,250.

And then on Friday, the housing market chimed in with surprises of its own. Contractors started building single-family homes at the fastest rate in 4-1/2 years. “The bond market was completely caught off guard by the increase in housing starts,” said Jane Caron, chief economic strategist at Dwight Asset Management in Burlington VT.

And stocks surprised most strategists as well. Just last week many had forecast stocks to continue their recent declines (or at least continue to move sideways). Q2 earnings jitters dominated the news. But as markets closed on Friday, many traders were left scratching their heads as the Dow rocketed to its best weekly gain since March, closing within easy striking distance of the 9000 mark.

But perhaps the mother of all surprises this week came from the bear of all bears, Doctor Doom, Nouriel Roubini. Just last week the ultra depressing economic prognosticator wrote an article “Brown Manure, Not Green Shoots.”

But this week in a significant flip, flop, Roubini actually stated, “the worst of the worst is behind us.” (He later of course whined that his words were taken out of context.)

Gomer Pyle frequently exasperated his immediate supervisor Sergeant Carter with the Private’s Pollyanna-style demeanor. With positive economic surprises everywhere, it is no surprise that Roubini feels a bit frustrated as well.

Dealing with Change for 40+ Women

If you’re old enough to remember rocking out to the Beatles when they were live and not a video on YouTube, chances are the pace at which change is occurring is disconcerting.   It’s all about rolling with it – especially in your business. 

Maybe you can’t embrace techno-pop or rap, but it’s still smart to stay in the game and stay relevant. Success is about more than just marketing and selling.  It helps to know what’s going on in the world around you.  Instead of thinking you’ve got it right and Gen X or Gen Y is full of beans – pay attention. The assumed power of the Baby Boomers moving through the demographic pipeline is a thing of the past.  The younger generations of adults now have larger numbers and more influence in our changing society. 

So, what does it mean to stay relevant? 

It’s not about trying to act like a teenager but keeping up with technology (somewhat anyway), keeping your appearance in the current decade rather than in a time warp and stop thinking, “When I was in my first management job we did it the right way – not THAT way.” 

I don’t like feeling like a dinosaur either, but our notion of “the right way” means nothing to these young adults. 

 Remember, perception is reality.  If you come across as superior and as if you know more than “those kids” they’ll turn away and won’t listen.  Remember when you were in your early 20s and you thought you knew everything and had the world by the tail?  It’s no different today.

 Most young adults in the 18-30 year old category have had a computer in their home since they were a toddler.  They probably don’t know what a cassette tape is.   Since they could vote or drink a beer we’ve been at war with Afghanistan and Iraq.  And, since they’ve been a tween, Casual Friday has morphed into Casual Everything. 

 I was talking with a marketing mentoring client yesterday.  I don’t want to say her age, but let’s just say she’s had her AARP card a few years now.  She exclaimed to me, “Oh, those kids don’t know anything!”

 Unfortunately that attitude will keep you on the sidelines when it comes to selling to 20 and 30-somethings.  Those younger folks have money to spend and they’ll buy if you don’t come across as superior or hopelessly old-fashioned.   

 On the flip side, I have another marketing mentoring client who’s 29.   She’s sees me as having wisdom and acumen based on decades of experience she hasn’t even lived.  I don’t preach or tell her how the world used to be.  I’m not judgmental about her lifestyle choices.  I had to be careful not to wince when she got her tongue pierced.

 The world has changed and you know what?  Some of those young folks that look easy to diss in their skinny jeans and platform heels are smart, hard-working, confident and have a lot on the ball.  That client of mine with the pierced tongue is becoming very successful since she launched her business last spring.
