Your Tips Appreciated on THIS One!
By Denise Michaels, Author, “Testosterone-Free Marketing”
Okay, this is a weird one. Today at lunch I’m speaking in front of the Rotary Club of Las Vegas. When I was asked a couple months ago I jumped at the chance. Rotary is considered a pretty Class A group of business leaders in any city.
Usually when I speak in front of a group – it’s mostly women: most recently a Divisional meeting for Lia Sophia reps – sort of like a Mary Kay for jewelry. But I’ve also given talks for Mary Kay, Beauti-Control, Tupperware and others.
So, like I said, I jumped at the chance. Then after the date was all set I discovered that 80 percent of this group will be men and the other 20 percent will be women. Alrighty then… So my message is about “testosterone-free” marketing and these kind of guys are about testosterone-heavy, competitive, damn the torpedoes and eliminate the competition. Women are about building relationships and creating ways we have things in common and don’t want to eliminate anyone.
I teach women how to avoid all that testosterone-heavy stuff and still succeed. This kind of audience embraces all that testosterone-heavy stuff.
What to do… got any thoughts about this?

How might men benefit from adopting techniques that come more naturally to women and what kinds of things can they start doing immediately?
I’ll think about that one this morning, Sue. *smile*
You may want to consider being where and who you are while inviting the testosterone enhanced by begining with a few questions: 1. How many of the males in this group are married? 2. How many of you either work for or work with women? 3. How many of you have a mother? For all of you that raised your hand on question #3, you will want to listen very carefully. The information I am sharing will have invaluable applications in your life. You of course, as the testosterone bearing, get to decide where, how and when to utilize this information – including the use of testosterone – to engage in profitable marketing.
Interesting Denise…but of course no accident! I think it will be invaluable for the men in the group to learn from you about how Testosterone Free marketing can help them communicate more effectively, because stats show that women are the bulk of new busines owners…this will help them engage & develop new clients who would otherwise be “turned off” by the old school “heavy testosterone” style of marketing. This will help them be in touch with their more feminine side (we all have both)
I am curious to know…did they sign up knowing what the subject matter was? What a good ice breaker to find out!
This is your chance to teach these guys a whole new side of marketing. Go for it. Even if they don’t use what you teach them all of the time, it might help them with their female clients/customers. I know I respond much better to a soft persuasion from someone I have a relationship with than to being clubbed over the head by someone I just met!
Here’s what happened: I made sure I schmoozed a little bit with everyone as they came in to warm people up. I also made sure I wore a magenta colored jacket w/ my outfit – a feminine color.
Everyone was gracious and warm and then when the guy introduced me he said, “Gentlemen, today we’re all going to get a lesson in feminism.” Talk about throwing Tabasco on top of a bowl of garlic ice cream. Sheesh!
I could see the arms crossing across their collective chests as I walked up to the platform and smiled.
Soooooo, I felt I had to come out swinging, figuratively speaking. At least to make sure it’s known I’m not a man hater. I talked about my marketing rules and then a word popped into my brain – action. I thought men love action. (It’s amazing how little patience an audience of one gender has for information designed for the other gender.)
So, I explained my five magic questions I use in selling (when I do – 75-80 percent of people say “yes” to doing business with me). I knew I was doing well when I finished that chunk of info and one guy whistled appreciation (not a wolf whistle) and another man in a soft voice said, “Wow! Great close.” So it turned out well – but believe me – it was an inauspicious beginning and a come from behind win. I’ll take it. *smile*
